Whelping Services

Pre Whelp Care

Moms should arrive two weeks pre-whelp.

An x-ray will be required approximately day 57 to determine puppy count. We do not supplement moms prior to whelp; however, if the bitch owners have a desired supplement they want given, it must be provided to us at the time of her arrival. We feed and recommend Inukshuk Marine 16 dog food for moms and puppies.  If owners have a different food of preference, it must be provided. Mom will spend her time doing light exercise and becoming acclimated to the nursery in the house.

Birth-4 Weeks

Mom will be given calcium after the birth of the first puppy. We do recomment the use of NuVet multiviatmins for moms. Puppies will be collared for identification purposes and weighed daily for the first two weeks to ensure all are gaining weight appropriately. Puppies will start  their early neurological stimulation beginning on day 3.

Mom and babies will be continuously monitored

4 Weeks - Go Home

Puppies will receive their wormings at 2,4 and 6 weeks. A dose of Neopar

(all noted on their vaccine records) will be given at 4 weeks..

Mom and puppies will move to the puppy building, which is adjacent to the outdoor kennels.  It is completely climate controlled and separate from the other dogs.  Here, the puppies will begin their exposure to the outside world (weather permitting).  The puppies have a separate play area where they will have a mobile with  hanging toys, as well as other small playsets for stimulation.  They are exposed to all of the noises that take place at a training kennel (i.e. training equipment, barking dogs, gunfire at a distance, tractors, lawnmowers, people coming and going, etc.), which makes for very well-rounded, socialized puppies. At about 5 weeks, puppies will begin the weaning process.  They will be given mush  twice daily, increasing to three times daily as less time is spent with mom.  She will continue to stay with them at night but will be kept apart for periods of time during the day until she is no longer with them.  Puppies will slowly transition to solid food.

Mom may go home any time after the puppies are completely weaned. During this time, they will be conditioned to the here whistle (3 short whistles).  When they are let out to potty, they are taken to the grass while the whistle is being blown.  We also do this when it is time for them to eat.  Soon, when they hear the whistle, they will automatically come to us. Puppies will be exposed to live pigeons, water (weather permitting) and begin their crate training before they go home. At 6 weeks, they will be given their first round of puppy vaccines and be microchipped.

At around 7 weeks, they will have temperament evaluations to help determine placement.

Puppies will begin going to their new homes at 8 weeks of age.  Puppy packs will be provided and contain the following:  A folder containing vaccination/worming records, microchip information, including how to register them, temperament evaluation notes, a pamphlet on Inukshuk dog food, a puppy checklist and any other pertinent information.
